DNA shows ancient ship carried olive oil, oregano

DNA scraped from inside clay vessels show that a ship that sank off the coast of Greece 2,400 years ago was carrying a cargo of olive oil, oregano, and probably wine, researchers reported on Friday. The new research may offer a way to analyze the long-gone contents of hundreds of containers, said Brendan Foley of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution.

Olive oil dulls the pain

Olive oil has painkilling properties, say scientists who have discovered a new compound in extra-virgin oil that acts the same way as anti-inflammatory drugs.
The compound, which they've named oleocanthal, has the same pain relieving qualities as ibuprofen and other nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), the research team report in the journal Nature today.

The 3rd annual Australian Olive Expo is being held in Canberra next week, with over 2000 people expected to attend. The Expo serves the olive industry stakeholders by providing a chance for growers to network, explore new equipment and products, and attend educational seminars.

For generations, many gardeners in California were accustomed to growing olives for oil or table fruit. Then came the invasion of the olive fruit fly, which was first discovered in the Los Angeles area in 1998 and quickly spread throughout the state’s olive-growing regions. Commercial growers fairly quickly had tools to control the pest. But until recently, the only advice for home gardeners was tough to hear.
